daija no hone 大蛇の骨 bones of a huge serpent
At the temple 円照寺 Ensho-Ji in Shinjuku and 豊仙寺 / 宝仙寺 Hosen-Ji in Nakano there are parts of the bones of one huge serpent kept as secret treasures.
River water can be poured over the bones for an oracle about coming rain.
At the temple Hosen-Ji the waster from the well 井の頭 Inokashira is used for offerings.

Ochiai no Kappa 落合の河童 The Kappa from Ochiai
In 1571, there was a great famine in Edo. From spring to July it was only raining and everything was overflown.
In 落合村の下落合 the village of Ochiai in Shimo-Ochiai there was a mountain priest named 佐貫坊 Sanuki Bo, who had caught a Kappa. This Kappa had fallen in love with a 人魚 "human fish".
Sanuki Bo promised the Kappa that his love would be fulfilled, if he would stop the rain and flooding.
Thus he saved the area.

江戸牛込通り寺町で天明５年３月、１１歳の男子が急に狂乱した。狐憑きの様なので祈祷したら、私はある屋敷に長年住んでいたのだが、住人が代わり新しい鎮守の稲荷を勧請した為居場所が無くなった。祠を建ててくれたら付近に火災が起こらないようにすると語ったので祠を建てた。

kuruiji 狂い死 a mad death
In Ushigome there was a female doctor, who suddenly fell down with great pain and begun to cry and shout in the voice of a child in pain. Then the pain was like splitting the skull and tearing her heart and stomach open. She even tried to murder some children in her hospital and after three days of mad behavior she finally died. This doctor had often given medicine and help for abortions, and this was the revenge for her cruel deeds.

neko Jizo 猫地蔵 Jizo and the Cat
Once in Edo there lived a man in Ushigome. He had a beloved cat, but the animal died and he was very sad.
Jizo Bosatsu appeared in his dream and advised him to go to the temple Jishoo-In 自性院 Jisho-In to see the high priest 鑑秀上人. He told him to have the statue of a cat erected.
This is now the Migawari Jizo, which takes on our illness and problems.

牛込山伏町に住む朝倉八十五郎という者が帰宅しようとした時、門前に大きな法師が立っていた。八十五郎は驚かずに、挨拶を言いながら袖の下を潜って入ろうとすると、この大法師は忽然と消えてしまったという。

At night on the 8th day of the 10th lunar month, a huge stone fell from the sky in Ushigome.
The year before, a similar stone had fallen down in 八王子 Hachioji.
There was thunder in the night and a light like a lightning.

itachi no kai 鼬の怪 the monster weasel
In 1821 the daughter of a merchant living in 江戸牛込袋町 Ushigome Fukuromachi had a strange disease of swellings in many parts of her body. Eventually even needles were coming ot of the swellings. At night when she slept, they saw a weasle running around in her bedsheets and under the matress.

四ッ谷が類焼した頃の初冬、夕暮れにある人の妻が縁先にいると、白髪の老人が笑いながらこちらに来た。目を閉じ普門品を唱えてから再び見ると消えていた。すると隣家の妻が急に狂気したという。

寛政11年3月22日雨の強く降る夜、四ッ谷大番町のある武士の家来が美しい女子と会った。以来その女子は夜な夜な家来の下を訪れるようになった。主人が見咎め家来を見張っていると、寝ていた家来がうなされていたので抜刀した。すると猫ほどの大きさの黒いものが軒下に逃げた。

宝暦の頃、江戸四ッ谷新宿に住んでいたある剣術指南が籠に乗ったところ、袂に入れていた狐の尻尾が籠からはみ出し、それを見た籠かきが驚いたので狐のふりをして料金を全額払わなかった。すると翌日から怒った狐に取り憑かれ、祈祷の甲斐も無く親族にも見放され死んだ。

午２月、四谷辺りの稲荷の神木に釘を打ったものが狐に取り憑かれた。

Masakado no kabuto 将門の兜
四ツ谷の辺りのある旗本家で、平将門の嫡流であるという家に、将門が着用した兜が伝来していた。いつの事か、金子を借用した時にこの兜を預けたところ、翌日に兜を返納しに来た。兜を預かった晩に家鳴りや振動が起こり、恐ろしいので返したいということだった。

ame ni aruku otoko 雨に歩く男
大雨が降っている夜に、忠兵衛が友人と歩いていた。払方町を通った時、下駄の鼻緒がゆるんだので友人を先に行かせたところ、井戸の脇から黒羽二重・はさみ帯・網笠をかぶり、中抜き草履を履いた者が出てきて井戸のまわりを歩いていた。けしからぬ者と思ったが、後で友人に見たかと問うとそんな者は知らないと言われた。

嘉永年間に、表四番街広小路の角乗込馬場付近にある織田屋敷の土蔵住居座敷などが何の理由もなく倒壊したという。これは地妖とよばれるものだ。

寒い夜、ある乞食が仏堂の奪衣婆像から綿を盗み、他所で寝た。すると夢に奪衣婆が出て「盗んだ綿布団は暖かろう」という。乞食は驚いて罪を悔い、翌日、綿を返しに行った。

寛永13年ころ、徳川家光の弓大将であった松平新五左衛門尉直次に与力すべく、人々がある場所で弓の稽古をしていた。人々は徳川家の氏神である八幡大菩薩が弓矢の守護神だったので、同地に八幡宮を勧請することにした。彼らの願いは叶えられたが、その時山鳩が3羽松の枝にとどまったといい、人々は八幡大菩薩の影向と受け止めたという。また将軍家に若君が生まれたのは、社僧が受けた八幡大菩薩の夢告に少しも違わなかった。他に神前で風流の踊りをしていると、亥の刻あたりに神木の松の梢から、提灯ほどの光るものが出てきて、社の上に落ちた。

元亀2年は大飢饉の年であった。春から7月にかけて雨が降り続き、洪水が起こった。落合村の下落合にいた佐貫坊という修験者は河童を捕らえ、河童が人魚に惚れていることを突き止めた。そこで佐貫坊はその恋心を利用し、人魚との仲を円満にまとめてやるかわりに、河童に洪水を引かせる作業をさせた。

八幡様のところを夜通ると狐に化かされる。それで狐が寄り付かないように、提灯でも何でも明かりを持っていくという。

稲嶺山にいた白狐が、誤って茶の木で目を突いてしまった。それで氏子たちも、正月3ヶ日は茶を飲まず、また目を病んだものは茶断ちをして願をかけると速やかに験がある。
- - - 稲峰山に住む、稲荷の使いの狐が誤って茶の木で目を突き、苦しんだが治った。そこでここの稲荷を「茶の木稲荷」と名づけたという。

子供がサイドカアに轢かれたが何ともなかった。また、自動車が食堂へ飛び込んだが、人がいなくて怪我がなかった。これは庚申さまのお守りによるという。

ある吝嗇な長者が金銀を人の来ない原に埋め、手伝った人をくらし橋で殺して川に流した（よってこの橋を姿不見（すがたみず）橋や俤（おもかげ）橋という。するとその報いを受けて長者の娘が蛇になった。長者は改心して入道した。

ある男が新宿の旅籠屋で買った飯盛女が夜中行灯の油を吸っていた。妖猫かと思ったが、舌の荒れを治すために油を舐めていたのだった。

明和九年、目黒行人坂の火事のあった晩、ある人が市谷左内坂で女が泣いているのを見つけた。火事で焼け出されたと言うので、家に連れて帰り、ごちそうをふるまった。いつのまにか居眠りをしてしまい、目覚めると、女も居眠りをしていたが、口元に毛が見え、よく見ると古狸となっていた。大睾丸を広げて火にあぶっていたので、撃ち殺そうとしたが、狸は飛び逃げた。
